As we write, Petralia Sottana is celebrating. September 8th is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the most important day in the local calendar: in the morning, at 10.51 sharp, three solemn peals of the church bells ring out together with fireworks, in memory of the earthquake — a sound signal in broad daylight, at an odd and precise hour, that travels across the whole village. In the evening Piazza Duomo fills up for the "Assunta Rinaldi" Prize and for a comedy performed in Sicilian dialect by the Compagnia Teatro di Borgata.

We tell you about this day because it says a lot about what kind of place Petralia Sottana is: a village where traditions are not reconstructions staged for visitors, but things the community does for itself, and has done for centuries. Anyone here on these days walks straight into it, no ticket required.

And the feast is only the beginning. September, in the Madonie, is the month when this land is at its best: the weeks now ahead are the finest of the year to come up here.

What's coming up over the next few weeks

Mid-September, Castelbuono. The liveliest village in the area right now, with cultural readings, horse riding and the celebrations in honour of the Holy Crucifix. The summer programme runs until the 21st. It's about forty minutes' drive from here, through the woods.

Late September, San Mauro Castelverde. A day of citizen science at the Tiberio Gorges: monitoring of the Pollina river, hands-on data collection, a very different way of experiencing the canyon compared to the standard visit. Suitable for families with older children too.

All month, up in the park. The Madonie Park keeps running guided visits and excursions throughout September. The Visitor Centre is right here in Petralia Sottana, on the main street: ten minutes there is enough to plan two full days.

September skies, and the telescope above Piano Battaglia

There is a technical reason why late September is the right time to look up here: the nights grow longer, the air is dry, and the summer heat haze that blurs the images has settled.

And there is a reason that concerns Petralia Sottana directly. On Monte Mufara, above Piano Battaglia, sits the Wide-field Mufara Telescope: on the night of 21 August 2025 it spotted asteroid 2025 QK3, the first Near-Earth Asteroid ever discovered in Sicily and the first in Italy in nineteen years. The telescope stands a few bends away from the peak you can see from the village.

The research is run by the GAL Hassin Foundation in Isnello, which counts the Municipality of Petralia Sottana among its supporters. The Astronomical Park is about an hour's drive away and offers guided tours and evening observation sessions: light pollution here is close to zero and clear nights are frequent, which makes the Madonie one of the best places in Italy for this kind of experience. Places are limited, so booking ahead is wise.

Even without instruments: on moonless nights, from the village viewpoints or from the road up to Piano Battaglia, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Anyone coming back late from a night of stargazing will find our rooms just a few steps away, in the heart of the old town.

Why the shoulder season works better here than elsewhere

The days are still long, but the temperatures have come back down to reason. The late afternoon light on the pale stone is the best of the year for photographs. And in the kitchen there is time to work properly again: at our restaurant, September is the month when produce from the farms around us reaches its peak, and there is finally time to talk it through at the table.

For more relaxed evenings, after a day on the trails, there is our pizzeria, with slow-fermented dough and ancient Madonie grains.

And above all: while the Sicilian coast in September is still busy, the inland has already emptied out. Anyone spending the day in Cefalù or by the sea and driving back up in the evening notices a difference of several degrees. Sleeping at a thousand metres, in September, means actually sleeping.

There is one more thing you only notice by staying a few days: from mid-month the village changes pace. The feasts are over, schools reopen, daily habits return. Those looking for an authentic village will find it now, more than in August.
